Mayweather-Pacquiao social spat spurs rematch speculation and fresh odds

Floyd Mayweather (50-0-0) and Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2) engaged in a social media tussle Tuesday, fueling talk of a potential rematch four years after the former eased to a clear points decision in the richest fight in boxing history.

Floyd Mayweather (50-0-0) and Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2) engaged in a social media tussle Tuesday, fueling talk of a potential rematch four years after the former eased to a clear points decision in the richest fight in boxing history. Odds at Westgate list “Pac Man” as a +150 underdog as of publication, down from +180 in September 2018. Mayweather moved to -180 from -220 in this span. The fight needs to take place by 12/31/2020 for action. Pacquiao punched his way to a split decision victory over Keith Thurman last Saturday, the latter dropping his first professional bout. Pacquiao stepped into the ring a -160 favorite, despite sitting as an underdog just three weeks ahead of the fight. The thrilling win gave Pacquiao the WBA Super World Welterweight title and his fifth victory in six fights since the May 2015 super bout. Mayweather, technically in retirement for the third time, last fought an official bout against Conor McGregor in August 2017, winning by TKO. The undefeated champ thrashed mixed-martial artist Tenshin Nasukawa in Japan on Decmeber 31, 2018 in a three-round exhibition bout which paid the American star a cool nine million dollars. ## Social Media Spat Mayweather, in attendance Saturday at Pacquiao's fight, tossed a couple of virtual punches at his nemesis on Instagram Tuesday, claiming the latter's fame is tied to their relationship. “This man's entire legacy and career has been built off its association with my name and it's about time you all stop using my brand for clout chasing and clickbait...,” Mayweather snapped. “Pretty Boy” also chided the media for pushing a repeat bout as an effort to see his undefeated record snapped: Embedded content: https://www.instagram.com/p/B0R3zdPFkSr/?igshid=181uvbwxntae7 Pacquiao quickly responded on Twitter as to Mayweather fame-chasing after attending the Thurman bout: Embedded content: https://twitter.com/MannyPacquiao/status/1153863517629505537?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1153863517629505537&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsports.yahoo.com%2Ffloyd-mayweather-and-manny-pacquiao-are-trading-jabs-on-social-media-152254127.html Both business-savvy camps continue to trade barbs on social media, building speculation for the rematch. Pacquiao's use of the *#MayPac2* hashtag drew the most attention, followed by offering up a potential contract on an Instagram post: Embedded content: https://www.instagram.com/p/B0TOQSMlChC/ ## “Fight of the Century” The first Mayweather-Pacquiao encounter on May 2, 2015 proved the richest fight in boxing history, drawing a record 4.6 million PPV purchases and slightly over $400 million in revenue. The tussle was a dud with Mayweather using his safety-first points attack to roll over an injured Pacquiao 118-110, 116-112, and 116-112 in an unanimous decision. Mayweather, who went off at -240 chalk, landed 148 of 435 punches (34 percent) to 81 of 429 (19 percent) for the +200 underdog. Bettors could possibly see a tighter spread and fight in a rematch with Mayweathers' stretch of inactivity and age. Fingers crossed there's a fight.

As legalized sports betting expands, so too are the wagering options available to gamblers. Sportsbooks are getting more and more creative in what they’re posting on their oddsboards. While traditional pre-event bets – such as point spreads, moneylines and totals – remain popular, live betting is become a larger part of the sports betting experience. Also, prop bets aren’t just for the Super Bowl anymore. In fact, there are props to wager on for practically any sporting event around the world.

Whether it’s on the NFL, college football, MLB, NBA, NCAA basketball, NHL, soccer, NASCAR, UFC, boxing, horse racing, tennis, entertainment or eSports, it’s difficult to win long term betting on sports. That’s why it’s important to read up on the news that impacts the markets, dig deep into advanced statistics and hear from oddsmakers about how and why lines are moving.

Here at BetChicago, we follow sports betting from a national and even international perspective, but we put a special emphasis on Chicago, Illinois and the Midwest region.
