NFL Divisional Round betting report: 'Everyone is on the Colts'
Bookmakers need the favorite Chiefs to cover the 5.5-point spread Saturday against the Colts at Arrowhead Stadium. The weekend's first kickoff is shaping up to be a big one for the books.
Public bettors are backing all four underdogs against the point spread for the NFL's Divisional Round of the playoffs, hoping a popular betting trend continues to cash tickets. Playoff dogs are on a 14-1 ATS run dating back to last postseason, leaving sportsbooks in a rare spot -- cheering for the favorites. For starters, bookmakers need the favorite Chiefs to cover the 5.5-point spread Saturday against the Colts at Arrowhead Stadium. The weekend's first kickoff is shaping up to be a big one for the books. “Everyone is on the Colts, and they are betting them every way imaginable," Westgate LV SuperBook oddsmaker Ed Salmons told BetChicago on Friday. "Colts OVER, Colts point spread, Colts moneyline. It’s just all Colts, which is shocking because the Chiefs treated the public so well earlier in the year, but with how they ended the season, bettors are on the Colts now.” The Chiefs raced out to a 7-0 ATS start to the season but finished 1-6-1 against the number. The Colts, meanwhile, are 10-1 SU and 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games and are fresh off rewarding underdog bettors in the wild-card round in Houston. "The biggest decision we have by far is the first game," William Hill director of trading Nick Bogdanovich told BetChicago. "With the underdogs covering again last week, they are falling in love with the dogs. "No one is lining up on the other side to lay a cheap price with the Chiefs. It could change once we reach the weekend and see the majority of the money come in, but currently we need the Chiefs and the other three favorites, which is rare." William Hill took $150,000 wager on the Colts +5.5, Bogdanovich said. CG Technology sportsbooks in Nevada are also seeing the majority of spread tickets backing the underdogs, none more so than the Colts. There's a similar story at MGM Resorts, where the Colts are attracting most of the money and tickets. Embedded content: https://twitter.com/jsimbal/status/1083860336116039680?s=12 Embedded content: https://twitter.com/scottatmirage/status/1083881511558889472?s=19 Salmons thinks the Chiefs could reach -6 at kickoff despite the public love for the Colts and has already placed a personal bet on Kansas City. __MORE:__ [NFL divisional playoff staff picks against the spread](https://www.betchicago.com/nfl-picks-against-spread-playoffs-divisional-round-2019) "I keep seeing these stats they are 1-9 against the point spread in their last 10 playoff games," he said. "I’m pretty sure Patrick Mahomes wasn’t their QB, it was Alex Smith (for the five most recent Chiefs playoff games). Andy Reid off a bye is usually amazing." Salmons is right, Reid's teams are 21-3 SU when coming off bye weeks, including 4-0 after first-round playoff byes. That record includes his tenure in Philadelphia, though; K.C. is 1-4 SU and ATS in the postseason under Reid. Elsewhere in this weekend's NFL action, sharp bettors at the Westgate have laid the seven points with the Rams for Saturday night's game against the Cowboys and on Tuesday took OVER 45.5 in Sunday's Chargers-Patriots game, moving the total up to 46.0 and eventually to 48.0, as it stands as of Friday's writing. While it may be strange to see the public going against the Patriots at home off a bye week, Bogdanovich explained public bettors' mentality, part of which is betting on what they *want* to see happen -- a loss by the mighty Patriots. “There is no question this is the weakest Patriots team we’ve seen in a while, and there is also no doubt this is the strongest Chargers team," he said. "Combine that with there being so much money on the Chargers last weekend that cashed (in Baltimore), so they are going back for more on the moneyline as well. There is a lot of Charger money, but if you like the Patriots, the line is getting pretty cheap." Sunday's late game features the largest favorite of the weekend, with the Saints holding steady as 8-point favorites over the Eagles. “I’m shocked the Eagles have gone this far, I have been picking against them every week," said Salmons, an Eagles fan. "I thought they would lose last week. The Bears played not to lose and they lost in a choke job. New Orleans and (Sean) Payton have been in this position to know they need to be aggressive." __Play and win:__ Our free [Saturday](https://betchicago.chalkline.com/games/nfl-saturday-pick-6) and [Sunday NFL Playoff](https://betchicago.chalkline.com/games/sunday-nfl-challenge) Pick 6 games.
