Patriots vs. Chiefs betting recap: AFC Championship was Brady-Mahomes showcase

The 2019 AFC Championship was a Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes showcase, and our betting recap pours over all the action of gambling significance.
The New England Patriots bested the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in the 2019 AFC Championship Game. For the second time this season, the two teams turned in a spectacular performance, with the Patriots winning 37-31 in overtime to earn a cover for their supporters and a cash for OVER bettors after betting lines closed at Chiefs -3 and 56.
There were 38 points in the fourth quarter to end regulation in a flurry and then Tom Brady and the Patriots offense took over after winning the coin toss to ensure the hot-shot Patrick Mahomes never had a chance to steal the game away. It was a riveting finish to a Championship Sunday that provided two overtime games for the first time ever.
With the line closing conveniently at a field goal in Kansas City’s favor, overtime was a sweat for spread bettors. And UNDER bettors who thought they were safe early were done in by two elite quarterbacks. Let’s take a look back at the action of betting consequence in our Patriots vs. Chiefs betting recap.
## New England Patriots vs. Kansas City Chiefs betting recap
The game began sluggishly for the Chiefs offense, as Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores did a good job of keeping Mahomes inside the pocket. That seemed like it’d give a huge leg up to UNDER bettors, who’d learn again that you’re rarely safe with two elite quarterbacks.
Still, it looked like the game would go to the half at 7-0 Patriots thanks to a Chiefs defense that was able get a couple stops. But Tom Brady engineered an impressive drive before the half, marching 90 yards on eight plays to give them a 14-0 lead.
When the second half started, the Chiefs had gone from favorites before the game to +280 on the moneyline. Which is where Mahomes came to life.
He found Sammy Watkins for a 54-yard gain on a crucial third down and then hit Travis Kelce for a 12-yard touchdown. From the snap of the third-down play to Watkins to the Kelce touchdown, it took only 54 seconds and it became clear at that point that the Chiefs were going to make a game of it.

In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs defense was able to force a big turnover while they were trailing 17-14 that set them up at the New England 23-yard line. Two plays later, Mahomes hit running back Damien Williams on a clearout to give Kansas City their first lead of the game.
But the Patriots would answer with their own touchdown drive to take the lead back and that became the theme for the rest of the game, as the two offenses matched each other over and over. It became a matter of who had the ball last between Brady and Mahomes.
With 2:03 to play and the Chiefs leading 28-24, Brady took the Patriots 65 yards in six plays. Rex Burkhead capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run that took the total OVER. Only there was still 39 seconds left on the clock and Mahomes still had a timeout to work with.

Mahomes marched the Chiefs into field goal range rather easily and Harrison Butker hit a 39-yard field goal to send the game to overtime. Given how the game had gone in that fourth quarter, it felt like there would be added importance on the coin toss.
Patriots special teams ace and coin-toss captain Matthew Slater called heads and the Patriots won the coin toss. He emphatically took the ball and Brady ensured that the rest was history.
The five-time Super Bowl champion converted three separate third-and-10s on the overtime drive, marching the Patriots down to the goal line where another Burkhead 2-yard touchdown sent the Patriots to Atlanta. There, they'll take on the Los Angeles Rams with Super Bowl 53 on the line.
The Rams opened as one-point favorites but the line [quickly flipped](https://www.betchicago.com/super-bowl-53-opening-betting-odds-rams-vs-patriots-spread-already-flipped) to the Patriots as action poured in.
