Super Bowl 54 props: Why Mahomes for MVP is not the bet to make

Super Bowl 54 props: Why Mahomes for MVP is not the bet to make

Patrick Mahomes is the rightful favorite to win Super Bowl 54 MVP, but there are more sensible investment paths for bettors to take.

Patrick Mahomes is the favorite to win Super Bowl 54 MVP honors, as he should be. Mahomes is hovering in the +100 to +115 range around the betting market to become the 30th quarterback to earn the award. Here are the odds from a few U.S. sportsbooks. <style type="text/css"> table.tableizer-table { font-size: 12px; border: 1px solid #CCC; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } .tableizer-table td { padding: 4px; margin: 3px; border: 1px solid #CCC; } .tableizer-table th { background-color: #104E8B; color: #FFF; font-weight: bold; } </style> <table class="tableizer-table"> <thead><tr class="tableizer-firstrow"><th>Book</th><th>Odds</th></tr></thead><tbody> <tr><td>DraftKings</td><td>+115</td></tr> <tr><td>FanDuel</td><td>+110</td></tr> <tr><td>Westgate</td><td>+100</td></tr> <tr><td>FoxBet</td><td>+100</td></tr> </tbody></table> Yet the Chiefs are only 1- to 1.5-point favorites to win the game and also shortly-price on the moneyline. A player from the losing team has been the MVP honoree only once — Chuck Howley for the Cowboys in Super Bowl V back in 1971. In other words, it’s highly unlikely for Mahomes to be named MVP if the 49ers win the game. Here are the Chiefs’ odds at the same books listed above: <style type="text/css"> table.tableizer-table { font-size: 12px; border: 1px solid #CCC; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } .tableizer-table td { padding: 4px; margin: 3px; border: 1px solid #CCC; } .tableizer-table th { background-color: #104E8B; color: #FFF; font-weight: bold; } </style> <table class="tableizer-table"> <thead><tr class="tableizer-firstrow"><th>Book</th><th>Odds</th></tr></thead><tbody> <tr><td>DraftKings</td><td>Chiefs -1.5 (-110), ML -122</td></tr> <tr><td>FanDuel</td><td>Chiefs -1.5 (-115), ML -128</td></tr> <tr><td>Westgate</td><td>Chiefs -1 (-110), ML -115</td></tr> <tr><td>FoxBet</td><td>Chiefs -1.5 (-110), ML -118</td></tr> </tbody></table> At the Westgate, for example, there’s just a 15-cent difference between a Mahomes MVP bet and a Chiefs moneyline bet. Some sportsbooks, in fact, priced Mahomes for MVP as a larger favorite than Kansas City on the moneyline, which makes betting the former a far worse option. <a href="https://twitter.com/RufusPeabody/status/1220170833881993216" class="embedly-card" data-card-width="100%" data-card-controls="0">Embedded content: https://twitter.com/RufusPeabody/status/1220170833881993216</a> So if you’re inclined to bet Mahomes for MVP, your better path is the Chiefs moneyline or Chiefs -1. You’re sacrificing a slightly larger payout but eliminating the risk of someone like Damien Williams (14/1 odds at Westgate), Tyreek Hill (20/1) or Travis Kelce (20/1) winning the award. The spread ticket, of course, would push on a 1-point K.C. victory. Last season’s Super Bowl provides a comparable example. Tom Brady opened at even-money to win the award, and while the Patriots beat the Rams 13-3, Julian Edelman was handed the MVP trophy, [cashing prop tickets at 18/1 odds](https://www.betchicago.com/super-bowl-53-prop-bets-live-updated-results). Another strategy for Sunday is to split your investment between a Chiefs moneyline play and a Mahomes MVP bet. A K.C. win likely cashes both tickets at a higher payout than a straight ML play, but it’s a sensible hedge in case Mahomes isn’t bestowed the honor. __RELATED__: [Super Bowl 54 action report](https://www.betchicago.com/super-bowl-54-props-betting-sharp-action-odds) For 49ers backers, on the other hand, sprinkling a few dollars on Jimmy Garoppolo at 7/2 odds makes sense. Quarterbacks have won [54.7% of Super Bowl MVPs](https://www.betchicago.com/super-bowl-54-props-mvp-odds-patrick-mahomes-favorite), including 13 of the last 20 years. Raheem Mostert, who ran for 220 yards and four touchdowns in the NFC Championship game, is also intriguing at a larger price. And if you’re feeling a little crazy? Kyle Shanahan loves to be unpredictable with his backfield – while Mostert was the star against the Packers, Tevin Coleman ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns against the Vikings the week prior and is a longshot to win the MVP. Here are Super Bowl 54 MVP odds list from three books: <style type="text/css"> table.tableizer-table { font-size: 12px; border: 1px solid #CCC; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; } .tableizer-table td { padding: 4px; margin: 3px; border: 1px solid #CCC; } .tableizer-table th { background-color: #104E8B; color: #FFF; font-weight: bold; } </style> <table class="tableizer-table"> <thead><tr class="tableizer-firstrow"><th>Player</th><th>Westgate</th><th>DraftKings</th><th>PointsBet</th></tr></thead><tbody> <tr><td>Jimmy GAROPPOLO (SF)</td><td>+350</td><td>+225</td><td>+310</td></tr> <tr><td>Raheem MOSTERT (SF)</td><td>+700</td><td>+900</td><td>+600</td></tr> <tr><td>George KITTLE (SF)</td><td>+1400</td><td>+1600</td><td>+2300</td></tr> <tr><td>Deebo SAMUEL (SF)</td><td>+3000</td><td>+3300</td><td>+3600</td></tr> <tr><td>Emmanuel SANDERS (SF)</td><td>+6000</td><td>+4500</td><td>+6700</td></tr> <tr><td>Kendrick BOURNE (SF)</td><td>+10000</td><td>+10000</td><td>+12500</td></tr> <tr><td>Tevin COLEMAN (SF)</td><td>+6000</td><td>+5000</td><td>+3400</td></tr> <tr><td>Kyle JUSZCZYK (SF)</td><td>+20000</td><td>+15000</td><td>+8100</td></tr> <tr><td>Robbie GOULD (SF)</td><td>+10000</td><td>+15000</td><td>+15100</td></tr> <tr><td>Richard SHERMAN (SF)</td><td>+8000</td><td>+8000</td><td>+3100</td></tr> <tr><td>Nick BOSA (SF)</td><td>+1600</td><td>+2500</td><td>+3100</td></tr> <tr><td>Fred WARNER (SF)</td><td>+8000</td><td>+12500</td><td>+6700</td></tr> <tr><td>Patrick MAHOMES (KC)</td><td>+100</td><td>+115</td><td>+200</td></tr> <tr><td>Tyreek HILL (KC)</td><td>+2000</td><td>+2000</td><td>+1700</td></tr> <tr><td>Travis KELCE (KC)</td><td>+2000</td><td>+2000</td><td>+1900</td></tr> <tr><td>Damien WILLIAMS (KC)</td><td>+1400</td><td>v2500</td><td>+1900</td></tr> <tr><td>Sammy WATKINS (KC)</td><td>+4000</td><td>+4500</td><td>+5100</td></tr> <tr><td>Mecole HARDMAN (KC)</td><td>+8000</td><td>+8000</td><td>+4100</td></tr> <tr><td>Darwin THOMPSON (KC)</td><td>+20000</td><td>+15000</td><td>+12600</td></tr> <tr><td>DeMarcus ROBINSON (KC)</td><td>+10000</td><td>+17500</td><td>+10100</td></tr> <tr><td>Harrison BUTKER (KC)</td><td>+10000</td><td>+15000</td><td>+15000</td></tr> <tr><td>Tyrann MATHIEU (KC)</td><td>+8000</td><td>+6000</td><td>+4100</td></tr> <tr><td>Chris JONES (KC)</td><td>+10000</td><td>+9000</td><td>+6700</td></tr> <tr><td>Frank CLARK (KC)</td><td>+10000</td><td>+8000</td><td>+6700</td></tr> <tr><td>FIELD - ALL OTHERS</td><td>+1600</td><td>X</td><td>X</td></tr> </tbody></table> __BOOKMARK US__: [Full Super Bowl betting coverage](https://www.betchicago.com/super-bowl-54-odds-betting-lines-props)

<div><p>As legalized sports betting expands, so too are the wagering options available to gamblers. Sportsbooks are getting more and more creative in what they’re posting on their oddsboards. While traditional pre-event bets – such as point spreads, moneylines and totals – remain popular, live betting is become a larger part of the sports betting experience.  Also, prop bets aren’t just for the Super Bowl anymore. In fact, there are props to wager on for practically any sporting event around the world.</p><p>Whether it’s on the <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/nfl-betting">NFL</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/college-football-betting">college football</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/mlb-betting/home">MLB</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/nba-betting">NBA</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/ncaa-basketball-betting">NCAA basketball</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/nhl-betting">NHL</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/soccer-betting">soccer</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/nascar-betting">NASCAR</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/ufc-betting">UFC</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/boxing">boxing</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/horse-racing-odds">horse racing</a>, <a href="https://www.betchicago.com/tennis-odds">tennis</a>, entertainment or eSports, it’s difficult to win long term betting on sports.
